General questions

What is AIS?

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) was introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in order to improve safety in the maritime traffic. Designed to prevent ships from collision, the AIS is used for vessels to broadcast their positions by VHF to other vessels within range and if two of them are about to collide an alert can be issued. Moreover, thanks AIS stations along the coasts, authorities are able to monitor vessels equipped with AIS.

Which information is transmitted over AIS?

AIS can transmit:

  • Static data (ship name, MMSI and IMO numbers, ship type, length, etc.)
  • Dynamic information (ship position, speed, trajectory, next port of call, etc.)
